LIP FILLER

Lip Filler is a clear injectable gel made up of hyaluronic acid, used  to plump, hydrate and improve overall shape of the lips.

There are various methods that can be used to insert lip filler, this can be done via multiple injections or also with a cannula, this involves the insertion of a small plastic tube into the body of the lips  which is used to deliver the hyaluronic acid, this is then removed after treatment. Sometimes a combination of techniques is best and options  will be discussed with you at consultation.

  • Pain may be minimised with the use of a topical numbing cream, this is the most common option for patients as it has relatively little downtime. Another option is with the use of a dental block.

    This consists of a few injections into the gums to completely freeze the lips and make the procedure completely pain free thereafter. The downside of this is that your face will be numb, and this will impair movement of the lower face and mouth for a few hours after treatment.

    A tailor treatment plan will be provided during consultation to firstly help us decide what your goal is you want to achieve and how we go about achieving this together over a time period.

    1. Bruising.
      Bruising depends on each individual, can last for 3-4 days but in extreme cases can last up until 2 weeks. Please bare this in mind when booking appointments prior to events. To help with bruising you can apply arnica cream to the area, if concerns regarding your bruising post lip filler please contact your practitioner for advice.

    2. Swelling.
      Very common post lip filler treatment due to the use of multiple injections into the lips. This normally resolves with a few days.

    3. Vascular occlusion.
      The lips are highly vascular structures, this means that they are full of blood vessels which have a role in supplying oxygen to the lips and also parts of the face. If hyaluronic acid is injected into these blood vessels this can impair the delivery of oxygen to tissues. It is important that this is recognised early as it can be fully reversed with the use of hyaluronidase, an enzyme used to breakdown hyaluronic acid. This is a drug which must be prescribed by a medical practitioner, you are in safe hands with the face doctor.

  • Question is, do you want to grow the size of your lips or maintain the size.

    If wanting to grow the size I would advise 2-3 months after initial appointment, to maintain 9-12 monthly.

  • The answer to this is yes, I would avoid injecting lip fillers into the area if you have an active cold sore as this can cause spread across the lips. If prone to outbreaks let your practitioner know and we will be able to provide you with anti-viral medication to help prevent an outbreak.

  • Small lumps are a rare possibility following injection. Some minor lumps can be common immediately post procedure, if persists for longer than 2 weeks please contact your practitioner for a review and assessment.

  • Avoid make up to the area for 24 hours

    Avoid touching the area to minimise infection.

    Avoid heavy exercise and alcohol for 24-48 hours
